Waterloo Catholic District School Board (WCDSB) is the 8th largest Catholic school system. It serves the region of Waterloo, in Ontario, Canada while its headquarters are in Kitchener. It has a total of 47 Elementary Schools and 5 Secondary schools. The total number of students in this board is approximately 30,000. To serve these students there is a staff of more than 3000 consisting of teachers, administrators, educational assistants; youth care workers, custodial staff, support staff etc. It is run self-reliantly and independently of the Waterloo Region District School board that runs the public schools in the region.
The Waterloo Catholic District School Board was created in the year 1836 in the form of two one /room school houses. Originally the schools were in the area of Berlin which is now known as Kitchener and Preston which is now known as Cambridge. There were a total of 6 Catholic Schools that included a Girls’ convent school also in the local area. The schools were extended in the Waterloo county after the British North America Act was passed in the year 1867. There were independent Catholic Board schools by the year 1968 in Waterloo, Kitchener, Preston, Galt, Hespler, New Hamburg, Bridgeport, Maryhill, St.Agatha, Elmira, Linwood, St.Clements. On January 1st, 1969 all these boards were terminated and integrated into one board as the Waterloo County Separate School Board by the Legislature of the Ontario. The Waterloo District Catholic School Board came to be Waterloo District Catholic School Board in the year 1997.
The schools of this board are also used for community groups. It is an initiative of the Ministry of Education to support non profit communities that hold activities like badminton practices, concerts and basketball games etc. The schools are closed for community during summer breaks, Christmas, Statutory Holidays, Secondary school exams or professional activity days.
There are also ECO Schools at WCDSB. It is an environmental educational program that aids students from grades 1st to 12th to become environmentally responsible students. As a part of this program the students minimize the consumption of energy, minimize the waste, aquire ecological literacy and green the school grounds by tree plantations.
