GO transit Whitby is one of the stations of Go Transit, which is also known as Government of Ontario Transit, an interregional Transit system operated by provincial crown agency Metrolinx. It is situated in Southern Ontario, Canada. The Government of Ontario fully financed Go Transit till the end of 1997.
History
GO Transit was created in 1967 by the Government of Ontario. On 23rd of May 1967, GO began as a three-year experiment to run single-deck diesel multiple units on a single rail line. Go Bus service was started in 1970 to extend the original Lakeshore train line. GO bus feeds the rail service and serves communities where trains do not reach. GO transit bi-level railcars was introduced in 1978. The Milton Go Train line was opened in 1981 where after a year the Bradford line and Stouffville line also opened by the Government of Ontario. In 1982, GO Advanced Light Rail Transit was launched by James Snow, Ontario Minister of Transportation and Communication at that time, which was an interregional light rail transit program. In 1990, GO off-peak train service was introduced on the Milton Line. After five years, new set of tracks and a station were built in Oshawa.
Developments
Go train service was fully restored along the Lakeshore east line to Oshawa on 30th of December 2006 with service on weekdays and holidays whereas service was fully restored along the Lakeshore West line to Aldershot with service on weekdays and holidays on 28th of October 2007. In the same year, GO Transit also added a new bus service between the University of Guelph and Cooksville. On 14th of May 2009, GO Transit merged with Metrolinx with the passage and approval of the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area Transit Implementation Act, 2009. Train service on the Georgetown line was extended to Kitchener restoring service to Guelph on 19th of December 2011 and the line was renamed as the Kitchener line.
