Its Origin can be traced back to 1902 as Georgia Railway and Power Company, which was the street car operator in Georgia. The company was formed through the merger of all street car companies. In 1906, the company acquired Atlanta Crackers to GAIN more ridership for its electric streetcar fleet. Georgia Railway and Power Company purchased the Hydro plant in 1912 at Morgan Falls to meet the needs of the growing customers. The company was generating over 94,200 kilowatts of electricity through its Three hydro and two steam generating facilities by 1914.

In 1926, Georgia Railway and Power Company was purchased by Southeastern Power and Light Company and former was renamed as Georgia Power Company. It had become one of the largest electric utilities to serve most region of the state. Georgia Power acquired several other utility companies in 1927 which would expanded its to over 70 cities. In 1950, Georgia Power sold its Transit division. In 1970's, the company was successful to install its first nuclear plant at Baxley with the three main producing units.
