Background
The company was founded in the year 1856 by Lytton, Samuel, and Marcus Younker, who opened a general store in Keokuk, Iowa. In 1874, Herman Younker, the youngest of the brothers, opened a dry goods store in Des Moines, Iowa. Soon, the Keokuk store closed and the Des Moines store became the headquarters for Younker Brothers. The company has witnessed a merger in 1927 with Harris-Emery Company, after which it became the largest departmental store in Iowa.
