United States Fish and Wildlife Service is an initiative taken by the federal government of the United States to preserve natural Habitat of animals and plants. This agency works under the jurisdiction of the United States Department of the Interior and is bound to manage wildlife, fish and natural habitats across the country.

The history of this agency can be traced back to 1871, when it was started as the United States Commission on Fish and Fishers by the United States Congress. After many amendments of federal regulations, it got merged with the department of the Interior in 1940.

United States Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) has been running many nature conservation projects across the United States which are focused on protecting endangered species, migratory birds, wetlands etc. It manages its operations through its various operational units including Federal Duck Stamp, National Wildlife Refuge System, United States Fish and Wildlife Service Office of Law Enforcement etc.

Coming to resources, the agency maintains 150 million acre of national wildlife refuge system and numberless wetlands. Apart from this, it also handles 70 fish hatcheries and 65 fishery resource offices. More than 86 ecological service field stations have also been operating under the supervision of agency. Most of the agency's wildlife and fish reservations are based in non-Federal lands.

Under the new acts and policies, United States Fish and Wildlife Service has developed many plans to promote voluntary conservation for endangered species. In this plans, there is the provision to offer credits to natural land owners so that all the necessary help could be provided to endangered species such as Indiana Bat, light footed clapper rail, California Condor etc.

The agency is headed by the director who further works through many subordinates. As of 2010, the agency had 9,000 employees working at various platform of the agency.
