Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) is an electronic system developed by the state welfare department of California, United States which with the help of a magnetically encoded payment card, transfer the Benefits to the people. It is used by the state welfare departments of both United States and United Kingdom.

In the United States, there are two categories in which the common benefits are provided by EBT i.e cash and food benefits. The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program which was earlier known as Food Stamp Program was launched to provide the Food benefits, which include only the purchase of non-alcoholic and food beverages as they are federally authorized benefits.

Cash benefits are categorized in Three benefit types that is Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF), Refugee Benefits and State General Assistance. The EBT card can be used only at the participating retailers and ATM's. To avail the food benefits, eatables or food items can be bought from the participating retailers which are authorized by USDA's Supplement Nutrition Assistance Program, using the EBT card. In the case of cash benefits, any item can be bought from the participating retailer or user can also withdraw cash from the participating ATM. All the SNAP Benefits in the United States are issued through EBT.
