Leicester Train Station or Leicester Railway Station is located at Leicestershire, England, United Kingdom. It is serving the city of Leicester. The station was established by the Midland Counties Railway in the year 1840. Leicester Train Station is owned by Network Rail and operated by East Midlands Trains. The station code of the station is LEI. There are four platforms available at the station and is of DfT category B.

History


The station was originally built by the Midland Counties Railway on 5th of May, 1840 and it was named as Leicester. The name was changed on 1st of June, 1867 to Leicester Campbell Street and it was again on 12th of June, 1892 that the name of the station was again changed to Leicester London Road. The rebuilding of the station was started in the year 1892. It took two years to re-build the station and thus the construction work completed in the year 1894. The architect appointed to re-build the station was Charles Turnshaw. It was on 4th of May 1840 that the first train arrived at the station. The train served the passengers from Nottingham and was operated with the help of Leopard steam engine.

Description


The station is considered one of the main line to connect the London St Pancras with Nottingham and Sheffield. The services from the station are provided with the help of Diesel trains only, as the Leicester station is not electrified. It was later in the year 2006 that the automatic ticket gates were installed on the station and the number of platforms was increased up-to eight. In the year 2010, the whole station was re-painted and the waiting Rooms were also constructed for the convenience of the passengers.
