The total capacity of the stadium is 53,359 seating capacity and 56,347 venue capacity. Initially the stadium was constructed as a replacement of the Waverley Park which was built for Australian rules football. The first match in the stadium was played between Port Adelaid and Essendon. The total cost involved in the construction of the stadium was approximately Australian $460 million.
The first indoor one day international match in the stadium was played between Australian and South African Cricket teams in 2000 and the VB Series 2006 also held in this stadium. It was also the first Australian stadium with moveable seats. In 2008, the Rugby League World Cup was played in the stadium between Australia and England followed by the opening games of State of Origin Series in 2009 and 2012.
