Before the Independence of India, the two firms 'Burmah Oil Company' and 'Asiatic Petroleum Company' started a joint-venture business of oil and gas in India under the name of 'Burmah Shell'. It was taken over by the Government of India on 24th of January 1976, when the joint venture corporation became nationalized and renamed as "Bharat Refineries Limited". After the year, the Government of India again changed the corporation's title and adopted the present name 'Bharat Gas'.
